3-2-1 Concrete Mix

Most Common Concrete Mix

The most common general use concrete mix is known as the three, two, one mix. This mix represents the most volume of concrete for the minimum price as the majority of concrete costs are for the cement powder. The aggregate costs are much less than the cement costs as bulk aggregates are extremely inexpensive.

With three parts gravel, two parts of sand and one part of cement you will have a large yield concrete mix that is sufficiently strong for most general construction applications such as cubs, sidewalks and foundations. This is a fundamental concrete mix that everyone should be familiar with.

3 parts ½ inch or ¾ inch gravel
2 parts sand (not rounded or tumbled sand)
1 part general use portland cement
1.5 parts water

The amount of water will vary greatly depending on many factors including your desired application for the concrete. At 1.5 parts water you would find the concrete to be very dry and difficult to work however the final strength would be highest.
